Could Self Mastery Be The Goal of Life?

Is self-mastery the true goal of life? Can achieving self-mastery bring awareness to the present moment? Research indicates that our attention span is typically only 2-5 minutes long. Even before we switch our focus from one task to another, we often anticipate the switch, resulting in less time spent fully engaged in what we are doing.

To truly concentrate, we need to focus on the details of our surroundings and the task at hand, avoiding distractions. Have you ever walked down a familiar street and suddenly noticed something you had never seen before? It’s as if we’ve been blind to it all those years. This lack of presence and awareness prevents us from fully experiencing the present.

If you are an iPhone user, you can gauge your level of mastery by checking your screen time. Within the settings, navigate to screen time, see all activity, and scroll down to Pickups. There, you can see the number of times you’ve picked up your phone in a day. I discovered that my 13-year-old daughter had picked up her phone 324 times in one summer day. It became evident that she was unable to detach herself from her phone, and I recognized the impact it was having on her mental health. Consequently, I took steps to regulate her phone usage.

However, our phones are not the sole source of distractions. We constantly encounter stimuli that divert our attention, such as images and scents that trigger memories. We worry about present troubles and future fears. Life bombards us with sensory overstimulation. We eat while watching television and simultaneously checking our phones. Music has become a perpetual background soundtrack. We bounce from one sensory engagement to another without pausing or fully focusing on any one thing.

Self-mastery arises when we can deliberately choose where to direct our attention without losing our focus. It involves consciously deciding what deserves our attention and committing to being fully present in that chosen moment. By cultivating self-mastery, we can break free from the cycle of distraction and immerse ourselves in the richness of the present.
